From YBB1614 - what does this mean?
Early 3 Door Cosworth models with engines up to number YBB1613 (this number is stamped on the front face of the block just above the water pump) had slightly different bearings. The bearing keep (or notch) was the same size in the block and the main bearing cap. Engines produced after this have a wider keep in the main cap. Therefore if you try to fit these bearings to an early engine, the main cap bearings will not fit unless they are modified. This change in bearing design makes it impossible to fit the bearings incorrectly - grooved bearing in the block, plain bearing in the cap.
What's the difference between Cosworth YB and Pinto main bearings?Ford Cosworth YB 16v Turbo
Apart from the keep width mentioned above, the difference is the main cap bearing. The Cosworth engine uses a plain bearing which is capable of taking greater loads than the grooved bearing found in Pinto sets. Whilst a Pinto set will fit, we highly recommend sticking to the correct bearings that Cosworth have always specified for the engine.
